Senior figures from Brussels are “running scared” because they realise Britain is likely to walk out of Brexit talks over the EU’s “ridiculous” demands.
The EU’s chief representative claimed there will be "no frictionless trade border" if the UK leaves the single market and customs union. But the UK Government dismissed threat as a “negotiating position”.
The British Chamber of Commerce director John Longworth stated that Britain would benefit up by £150billion in a year even without any deal with UK. The strike by the EU's central mediator agreed with a push by Remainer groups in Britain, driven by the CBI, to constrain Britain to remain in the single market and traditions union for an expanded period.
CBI director-general Carolyn Fairbairn said: "Instead of a cliff edge, the UK needs a bridge to the new EU deal. Mr Barnier said that, "I have heard some people in the UK argue that one can leave the single market and build a customs union to achieve frictionless trade.
The Prime Minister Theresa May was walking away from Brexit negotiations in September. The move would be designed for “domestic consumption” to show that Mrs May was playing tough over some European Union figures want the UK to pay before leaving.
In a further slight to Prime minister, Mr Michel Barnier has agreed to have an “extended meeting” in next week with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
