A Conservative MP has had the party whip suspended by Theresa May after using the n-word at a Brexit panel event. Anne Marie Morris, the MP for Newton Abbot in Devon, said sorry for causing offence with her use of the word, after a string of opposition politicians accused her of racism.

The Prime Minister took swift action against the MP, which she described as “completely unacceptable”, And the Mp was suspended.

The MP remarks, recorded by the Huffington Post at the East India Club, caused an immediate backlash, with opposition politicians calling on May to withdraw the whip from Morris. Ms Morris quickly apologised when audio emerged, claiming her use of the phrase was “totally unintentional” - she said by an email.

Politicians from over the range communicated their nauseate at Morris' words, including Tory MP Heidi Allen, who said a statement of apology was insufficient and the party must show zero resistance towards racism.

A Conservative source said that May had initially been unaware of the remarks because she was had been with the Australian leader and then in the House of Commons.

Theresa May faces a difficult decision as the loss of even a single MP could destabilise her minority government. Newton Abbot, in Devon, has a Conservative majority of 17,000.

About three hours later, May released a statement saying Morris was being disciplined and the whip suspended.
